The Riga Terbatas building is a well-known landmark, in a corner location on bustling Terbatas Street. It is 500 metres from the Old Town, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the quality of its Art Nouveau architecture, and the building is part of this heritage, topped by a graceful clock tower and with an elegant portico over the ground floor entrance. The centre is on the fourth and fifth floors, with views into the heart of the Old Town. Foreign investment since the 1990s is helping to transform Riga and there are many long-term construction projects improving the transport and commercial infrastructure, notably around the airport area. All the major Latvian financial institutions are based in the centre's locality, along with the offices of key public utilities. The port is a cargo hub of growing importance as trade grows with other Eastern European countries and China.
